The air is the transmitter of sound, but we can’t see it. How can we represent sound without air? Does the sound has an image, a material representation?
We decided to record the sound around the Palais de Tokyo, taking advantage of the protest in Paris transmitting reflection on politics expressed through anger.
We took simultaneously pictures of the protest and sound recordings. This are both medium that we wanted to mix in order to create a new image. The sound, produced at the same time as the photography is heterogeneous, its wave shows acoustic saturation and silences.
This noise, once drawn in 2D is designed in 3D. Thanks to Grasshopper, we elaborated a program that transform in a first step the sound wave in a 3D object, than in a second step, apply the picture on the wave. The picture is deformed by the wave and the new picture obtained is composed of the major colours of the original picture. Thus, a saturated sound follows a bright colour, very present during the strike. Whereas a dull sound is defined by cold colours. The program that we developed deform a picture by the sound its produce.
The final result has been obtained randomly, it can change according to the sound and the picture chosen. But thanks to this Grasshopper file, we succeed to represent the sound by an image.
